چکیده

Seismic evaluations of many existing deck-truss bridges have revealed the vulnerability of their substructure and members of their superstructure. An innovative retrofit strategy developed by the authors includes replacement of the existing non-ductile end and lower-end bracing with ductile panels by incorporating energy dissipating devices to act as fuses, which can yield and dissipate energy while protecting both superstructure and substructure. A 27-ft long deck-truss bridge model was designed and constructed at the University of Ottawa, and was pseudodynamically tested in its as-built as well as retrofitted conditions. Two configurations of Eccentrically Braced Frames, EBF, and Vertical Shear Links, VSL, were used as ductile retrofits, and both performed well. The ductile retrofit devices exhibited a robust hysteretic behavior, dissipated the seismic induced energy and prevented damage in other structural members of the model bridge when it was subjected to scaled El Centro earthquake. This paper describes the retrofit concept, the innovative seismic testing procedure, and the performance of the steel ductile retrofits.

Seismic Retrofit of Bridge Steel Truss Pier Anchorage Connections

In assessments of the seismic adequacy of existing steel bridges, the steel-to-concrete anchorage connections typically found at the base of steel truss piers can be potentially vulnerable, having little to no ductility and inadequate strength to resist seismic demands. Many other non-ductile failure locations may also exist along the seismic load path. Failure would result in unacceptable perf...

Multi-hazard (blast, Seismic, Tsunamis, Collision) Resistant Bridge Piers

Bridges are often built in locations susceptible to multiple extreme hazards. Meeting some or all of these constraints drives the development of innovative multi-hazard design concepts. This paper presents the results of research conducted to develop and experimentally validate such multi-hazard bridge pier concepts. The first concept is a pier-bent made of concrete filled steel tube columns. F...

Seismic Retrofit of Bridge Steel Truss Pier Anchorage Connections (2002-2003)

In assessments of the seismic adequacy of existing steel bridges, the anchorage of steel truss piers to their foundations often has insufficient strength to resist seismic demands. Many other non-ductile failure locations may also exist along the seismic load path that cannot provide adequate seismic performance. Although strengthening is an option, this approach may only transfer damage to ano...

Experimental Investigation of Seismically Resistant Bridge Piers under Blast Loading

This paper reports the findings of research examining the blast resistance of bridge piers that are designed in accordance with current knowledge and specifications to ensure ductile seismic performance. Blast testing was conducted on 1/4 scale ductile RC columns, and nonductile RC columns retrofitted with steel jacketing. The seismically designed RC and steel jacketed RC columns did not exhibi...

Effect of Link Slab on Seismic Response of Two Span Straight and Skew Bridges

Highway bridges are frequently constructed as simple span structures with steel or concrete girders and a cast-in-place concrete deck, spanning from one pier to another. At each end of the simple span deck, a joint is provided for deck movement due to temperature, shrinkage, and creep. Bridge deck joints are expensive and pose many problems with regard to bridge maintenance. Elimination of deck...
